My Skin Journey with La Roche-Posay

Having problematic skin can be the ultimate confidence knock. I have struggled with my skin ever since I was an early teen; all due to the horrible H word…Hormones!

When it came to my skin it felt like I had tried everything. From lotions and creams to bars of soaps and face steamers. Nothing ever seemed to help my skin.

After endlessly browsing through beauty store websites, I came across the brand La Roche-Posay. The reviews seemed really positive so I decided to give it a go…what was there to lose? I brought the Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel for oily sensitive skin (£12.00) as well as the Effaclar Duo+ (£16.00) .

After removing my makeup with a cleanser, I squeeze a small amount of the cleanser onto my fingers and massage it into my skin until it starts foaming, then wash it off with a wet flannel. Once I have second cleansed (this is a super important step for problematic skin) and toned, I then go in with a pea size amount of the Effaclar Duo+ and moisturise my face. I also use it before applying my primer in the morning as part of my makeup routine.

The results after using these two products for 2 weeks were visible and really impressive. My skin felt softer, I was getting less break outs and my face was noticeable less oily!

1 year on and as I get older and my body is getting use to hormones etc, my skin has significantly improved, but I really believe it has been with the help of these two La Roche-Posay Effaclar products.

So Me Brow Obsessed

Over the years brows have become such a big craze, and it’s turned me brow obsessed!

I’ve been through all the usual and expected phrases; over plucked, the scouse brow, grown out, really thick, really light…you name it…my eyebrows have probably gone through it.

There is an intimidating amount of brow products on the market, from gels, to powders to pomades and self-tinting; choosing the right one that works with our hair colour, skin type and general preference can be hard work.

Introducing the So Me Brow kit and brush!

So Me have recently launched an amazing brow kit, which not only comes in 3 different shades (I use Mocha) but also comes with the most stunning brow highlight. The powder within the brow kit is so soft, smooth and easy to use. Whether you like your brows full and slightly darker, or natural and faded – the powder is completely buildable to suit you.

On nights out or long days at work, I like my brows staying in place…I mean don’t we all! Thankfully, the So Me brow product is completely budge-proof. On ‘bad brow days’ when I’m in urgent need of a visit to the salon, I will sometimes use the Loreal Paris Brow Wax with the So Me Brow Brush to help shape my brows a little more, then use the So Me Brow Powder to set them in place. The amazing thing about this product is you can use it however you want! And not forgetting to mention the brow highlight that comes in the kit…the glow is real!

The White Company NOIR Candle

My second love, after beauty, has to be interiors. Since moving into my first house just over a year ago, my partner and I have become obsessed with Pinterest and homewear! Prior to this, I would’ve found programmes like Grand Designs and an interiors magazine super boring so it’s crazy how much we’ve changed.

I’ve always been a huge fan of the White Company for luxurious bedding, towels and pajamas, and most recently stumbled across their range of dark candles- so late to the party right? On my birthday I decided to treat myself and buy the two wick NOIR candle. I’m so into mens fragrances, and anything that my partner would also enjoy is definitely a big plus as he can be so picky with anything I buy for the house.

The stunning black glass packaging is perfect because we were looking for a candle to match our dark downstairs toilet, and most of the other white company candles were all white (obviously) so I was pleased

to come across a black candle which also smelled gorgeous. The white company describe this candle as ‘A sensuous and warming floral scent that’s sophisticated, intriguing and contemporary’. I’m terrible at describing scents, but this really does sum the candle up.

I’d highly recommend checking out this candle if you’re looking for a deep scent which fills the room even when not lit, and would look good in any room of the house. It’s £35 and you can purchase here

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm

A cult beauty favourite, the Clinique Take The Day Off cleansing balm seems to be in the beauty cabinets of every skincare and beauty guru.

After reading and watching many rave reviews, I thought it was finally time to try it myself. I’m always trying to up my skincare routine, and wanted to add a cleansing balm into my collection, especially for double cleansing which I’m pleased to say is a habit that has stuck!

The balm is super lightweight and if you have oily skin like me, it’s also very moisturising without being too heavy. Using my fingers I gently massaged the product into my skin, and after a few seconds the balm quickly removed all traces of eye and face make-up (apparently sunscreen too which I’m yet to try, but good to know with spring/summer around the corner!).

The product transforms from a solid balm, into a silky fluid oil. Oil is GREAT for fighting oil, so it’s a must have for those with oily skin prone to breakouts. I love how it left my face feeling hydrated as if I had just moisturised, so it really does feel like an everyday 2 in 1 product. The brand claims it is suitable for all skin types, and I would definitely agree that those with sensitive and oily skin can use this. You only need to use a very small amount, and so I can see this product lasting for a very long time!

Overall for an everyday product that does what it claims to do, won’t irritate your skin and isn’t too pricey- the Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm is for you!

It’s £23.00 for 125ml and you can purchase here

Sensitive Skincare Hero- Sönd!

After last weeks mishap when trialling (and failing to patch test) a new beauty mask, I really needed a reliable skincare product that wouldn’t irritate my sensitive skin. Hello Sönd!

Sönd Skincare is one of the clients we are lucky enough to work with. They have recently launched a NEW range of alkaline skincare products (with super cute names) which were born out of a passion to create products that would have a real impact on peoples lives.

Sönd is a brand founded in science and wellness, and thrives on helping it’s customers achieve healthy, feel good skin.  They are absolute experts in sensitive skin, and you can rest assured that all of their products will have a noticeable impact!

My personal favourite is the Midnight Feast Night Cream (£38.00). I applied one pump (which was plenty, I can see this lasting a long time) after cleansing, and massaged gently onto my face and décolletage. The cream is thick, but not to heavy so didn’t clog my pores or cause any breakouts. Midnight Feast really is a nourishing feast for your skin, and immediately made my skin feel smoother and more hydrated.

After messing around with my skin last week, and treating it pretty badly after a mad weekend, it was exactly what my dehydrated tried skin needed. This rich night cream contains organic argan, coconut and hemp seed oil to plump tired and dry skin, as well as nourish and calm skin. I woke up the next day with vibrant, healthy looking skin and it also looked less dull and grey which many of us experience during the winter months!

If you experience from sensitive, problematic skin I would definitely recommend Sönd. To get the best results use the full range, this is because most skincare products today are acidic and may disrupt the process of the products. They have many packages to help get you started on the range (and they’re better value too) which you can view here

Detox Dust by BYBI

When I came across the Detox Dust (£22) by Bybi I knew I HAD to try it. One, its January and who doesn’t need a product that says ‘DETOX’ and two, I’m a sucker for face masks- mainly because nothing makes my face feel as clean or bright after a long day in London. I also love trying out anything new, slightly different and can’t help but get pulled in by gorgeous packaging!

Detox Dust is skincare customisation at its best-you decide what makes up the base of this anti-pollution face mask, which means its suitable for all skin types.

A blend of activated charcoal and kaolin clay work to rid the skin of toxins, impurities and daily grime. Simply add honey, yoghurt, water, avocado, milk, oil (you get the point) to the dust to form a paste, and smooth onto your skin. This enables you to change up the formula depending on what your skin needs at the time.

Lotus, ginseng and papaya enzymes act as powerful antioxidants to regenerate dull skin whilst protecting against free radical damage caused by pollution and city grime. Oats provide gently exfoliation and anti-inflammatory properties to soothe and calm stressed and sensitised skin.

The brand is natural, cruelty free AND vegan friendly, so I was hoping this product would be ideal for my sensitive, blemish prone skin.

I’ve probably mentioned in previous posts that I grew up with super sensitive skin- I was pretty much allergic to anything I put on my face- make-up, face paint and sun tan lotion specifically. As I’ve got older my skin seems to have built up a tolerance and I can now handle sun tan lotion and make-up, as well as most skincare products. I can’t remember the last time I had a reaction…famous last words.

I sat in the bath with the face mask (which I mixed with water) and it felt very much like any other clay mask. I left it on for 10-15 minutes and then took off the mask with a flannel. To my surprise I was left with what looked like sun burn—and goggle marks! I had to see the funny side, I mean I was working from home the next day so no worry of seeing people there, and I’m very used to my skin reacting…also my boyfriend barely noticed! What is it with men and not noticing the very obvious, usually he notices if I’ve changed my hair or painted my nails but not when I have a bright red face…which made it even funnier! In hindsight, for my particularly sensitive skin, I should have mixed the powder with yoghurt, or avocado as this would’ve been gentler on my skin.

However, although I did have a slight reaction which `I would make others who have sensitive skin aware of, since then my skin has felt clear and bright. I haven’t felt the need to wear make-up the last two days since applying the mask, and my skin feels less dull and grey, and more vibrant and dewy!

Would definitely recommend to those looking for a new face mask that’s fun to mix and customise yourself for an overall glow, however note to self: patch test!

You can buy the Detox Dust for £22 here.

A Scent Sensation: Yves Saint Laurent Mon Paris

I was delighted to receive the YSL Mon Paris Perfume this Christmas, a sparkling fragrance inspired by Paris- the city of love!

‘Mon Paris’ is a fragrance which urges you to seize the moment, transcend the present and prepare to fall head over heels into the arms of a passionate love.

A truly romantic and super feminine perfume, I was surprised that this would a scent I’m now obsessed with. I usually prefer masculine fragrances, basically anything my boyfriend would wear, but I couldn’t resist this more floral perfume and it’s nice to have something a little different on my dressing  table. The stunning pink and black bottle would sit proudly upon any surface, and adds an ultra feminine touch to the room.

This beautiful fragrance has notes of pear, fruit, Datura orchid, white flowers, patchouli and white musk. It claims to be ‘Spell-binding, head-spinning, Mon Paris perfume captivates from the very first time it is worn thanks to its ultra-pure radiance’ which I totally agree with and have received many compliments since wearing it

Haircare Heroes

Having blonde hair often means brassy tones and dry ends. I’ve had highlights for ten years, having grown up with bright blonde hair, then like many others it went darker in my teens. As I’m sure many other blondes will agree, keeping your hair looking healthy can be a challenge and half the battle is finding the right products to use.

My new haircare favourite is the Oribe Bright Blonde Shampoo (£41).  It immediately illuminates blonde and silver hair, and corrects brassiness and yellow tones while brightening natural highlights. I’ve been using the product for about a week now and my hair is transformed! It feels healthy and so bright like I’ve just had my highlights done- exactly what I look for in a shampoo. I’ve also noticed that the yellow tones in my hair are dramatically reduced, and after using this product for just a week, I’m so excited to see the results after a month. This shampoo is recommended for everyday use, and it does exactly as the packaging suggests, nourishes and revitalises blonde hair. Another added benefit is that the Oribe shampoo is free from sulphates, parabens and sodium chloride. The packaging is also a gorgeous coral pink so sits proudly in my bathroom, an insta friendly shampoo!

For those who might prefer to spend a little less, I’d also recommend the Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel Wash (£20)  The lavender infused shampoo is ideal for colour enhancing and is developed to rescue dull hair and restore shine. This shampoo left my hair feeling soft, shiny and luxurious and after a few uses my hair looked visibly brighter and in better condition. If you’re a blonde looking to keep your hair colour fresh and vibrant I’d definitely recommend this shampoo for everyday use.

Lastly, I’ve been using the John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Lightening Spray (£6.99). This spray promises to target highlights to help you go up to one and a half shades lighter. I used this on my recent visit to Stockholm and noticed that in all of my travel pictures my hair looked fresh and bright- a big yes from me! A super cheap product you can spray on wet hair for a brighter blonde everyday.

Cristina Coelho is one of London’s most coveted facial experts specialising in high end bespoke facials which promote the youthful rejuvenation, skin health and radiance. A bespoke facial is tailored to your exact skin type and requirements, so you know you’re getting the right facial for YOU.

Previously, I had only experienced one other facial, so I knew little of what to expect.

I have always had oily skin that is prone to blemishes, and until I was in sixth form at school, was allergic to most make-up, face paint, sun tan lotion…so my relationship with my skincare has never been great.

After hearing many rave reviews about Cristina, I was delighted to be welcomed into her cosy treatment room, in the beauty hub of Wimpole Street. As soon as I met Cristina, her warm personality made me feel instantly at ease and excited for my skin transformation! Cristina asked me questions about my skincare concerns, my skin type,  my regime, as well as the products she was due to be using, and every stage of the facial so I was completely informed. She is truly an expert in her field- the type of person you could spend hours quizzing about skincare, its rare you meet a skincare guru as knowledgeable as Cristina.

After the consultation Cristina explained I was due to be having the Active Vitamin facial, which is packed with nourishing, rejuvenating ingredients and leaves the skin radiant and dewy. The facial sounded ideal considering as I was due to go on a girls trip the next day and needed a serious GLOW.

So what does the facial do?  ‘The freshest, most active forms of vitamin A & C and antioxidants are driven deep into the lower layers of the skin with an DF Ionzyme Machine, which uses soundwaves and small electrical pulses. This scientific approach stimulates collagen to soften lines and improve elasticity, increases hydration and boost radiance. The Active Vitamin Treatment is suitable for all skin types and is particularly effective at addressing sun-damage, pigmentation, drynesss.’.  uneven skin tone and scarring, with measurable differences after just one session.

After the treatment, I felt totally rejuvenated after a long week at work and my skin felt instantly brighter, softer and more dewy. I must admit, I felt a little nervous to jump on the tube as someone who rarely leaves the house make-up free, but I immediately felt more confident in myself and happily started my commute back home.

The next day I expected to wake up to the usual grey, uneven skin, but instead saw a MUCH brighter complexion and didn’t need to apply half the foundation I usually would, if any. My friends and family commented on my new found glow, and I felt overall more confident as a result. For anyone looking to embark on a skincare regime that works, I couldn’t recommend Cristina enough for regular facials that will transform your skin and get you the results you’re looking for!

The Most Instagrammable Tanning Brand

Tan Luxe has to be THE most Instagrammable tanning brand that’s taken the UK by storm.  Having tried many well known tanning brands in the past, none of them blew me away and I couldn’t bear the biscuit smell that came with a safe tan. So while I’m obsessed with the glow that comes with a real tan, I was yet to find a safe alternative to the sun that worked for me.

During the winter months my skin looks grey, tired and super pale so I was most excited to try the Face tan drops (£35.00), which really are a game changer! Mix a few drops with your favourite serum or moisturiser, and then gently rub into you face as you usually would. You can apply as part of your usual make-up routine before applying your foundation, or in the evening before bed. I tried both, and loved the fact I could wake up without turning my pillows brown and my skin looked sunkissed and golden without looking orange! I mixed three to four drops and in just few hours I had a natural looking dewy glow. I have very oily, blemish prone skin so I did notice a few new spots, but I think that was due to the heavy moisturiser I applied, not the tan drops, however it’s something to consider if you do have oily skin. I now apply with a lightweight serum. Make sure you apply down to your neck as well or you may find your face will become much darker than your neck, and wash your hands thoroughly after applying. Happily, the tan comes without the biscuit smell which most of us are used to with usual tanning products, and the tan lasted 3-4 days before needing to be topped up. I didn’t need to apply my usual high coverage foundation, and felt confident to leave the house with half the bronzer and foundation I usually apply!

Before a night out with friends, I tried The Body tan drops (£42.00). What I really love about both these drops is that you can customise your tan, so I added a few extra drops to my body moisturiser to look extra sunkissed- whilst steering clear of looking tangoed! If this was for a day time look I’d use one or two drops. The drops are also packed with raspberry seed oil and vitamin E- so lots of added skin benefits. I often get nervous applying new products before a night out, because a beauty disaster can put you in a bad mood and really knock your confidence before going out. However the tan left no smell, no streaks and so no drama!

For day to day, I’ve been using TAN-LUXE’S Hydra-Mousse (£37.00) which is a super speedy way to fake a sun-drenched holiday! I was pleasantly surprised that the water looks crystal clear, and pumps out as a luxurious foam so it’s easy to apply and absorbs quickly and seamlessly into the skin. Within hours I had achieved a perfectly golden tan and my skin felt soft and moisturised, which is ideal for the winter months when it can become dry. This is due to the vitamin B5, C, E and raspberry seed oil which helps to illuminate the skin and leave it perfectly conditioned- a yes from me!

If you’re looking for a natural looking, winter glow that will brighten your complexion and provide you with a safe alternative to the sun, I’d definitely recommend TAN-LUXE. The packaging sits proudly on my vanity, and it ticks every box- a seamless sun kissed tan that doesn’t smell of biscuits and you definitely won’t wake up with your face still on the pillow.
